Insurance Woes?

Several home owners on the mountain have had letters recently from insurance carriers increasing our rates.  Apparently Farmers no longer wants our business, and several other companies, too.  For some reason, $4000.00 a year now seems to be the magic number.

Some have had a 300% increase, some policies have gone up as much as 10 times their original rate.

Let’s see, during that last fire, depending on how you draw the line between zip codes, some say we lost no homes.  I count a few on the grades lost in the last fire.  But comparing that to 500 in Rancho Bernardo or Scripps Ranch?  It just doesn’t seem to add up.

If you have a company that will insure on this beautiful mountain, please send it my way to share.  We’re glad to give the business on the mountain to a good company.

    • Hello Kati,

Thank you for offering your recommendation of Mathew King for our Palomar insurance needs. How long have you had your Palomar place insured with him, and have you ever had to file a claim? Just wondering what to expect if he needs to respond to one. We currently have Farmers. 😦

      • Farmers increased our rate from $1200 a month to $4000 a month. We got a great deal through another company.

        • Bonnie,

Would that be Mathew King, or another company?

  2. What timing, Bonnie! I just got off the phone with my Farmers Insurance agent about just this thing. In the last 4 years, our premium has increased nearly 8 times what we originally signed up for. They’re telling me that the California Department of Insurance has essentially told them to charge homeowners the rate it would cost to insure them, because the fire rating has jumped again this year and they have no other insurance company to help them share the load. I looked on the internet for comparison quotes and Farmers came up as the only one that would write a policy. My agent also told me that if anyone cancels their policy and then tries to re-instate it, they will not renew it, but current policies are grandfathered. So I guess they will not be writing any more policies up here. Oh, and they also told me the state policy is not much better, and however excellent our volunteer fire department is, they don’t rate a discount for being close by like a regular fire department would. 😦
