Mother’s Day Tradition on Palomar

A few days ago a mom called.  Chris said she and her three, now-college age sons, have a tradition of camping in Doane Valley on Mother’s Day weekend.  They always have a great time fishing, hiking, eating ’round the campfire and sleeping in their tents.

However, this stressed-out mom had just seen the forecast saying SNOW was heading our way!  Could that be true?!???  The cabin rentals she checked on were all booked and she was hoping I could find her another option.

An option was found.  They bundled up and left Orange County Thursday morning to come to the mountain for their annual adventure.  It was decided that she would ‘try it’ at the campsite.  However, if the weatherman turned out to be right, she’d pop by our place and I’d show them to nice, warm and dry accommodations.

A few hours later a car coming from the direction of the State Park pulled in our driveway.  One of her sons had volunteered to deliver his mom to a cabin where she could be warm and dry. I had to laugh when she said he would be going back to camp with his brothers.  Standing in front of the warm fire in the cabin, he quickly replied that he wouldn’t want his mom to stay alone and since there was an extra bed (and internet!), he would stay with Mom.

His two brothers braved the storm Thursday. They said they got up in the middle of the night to tie down more tarps as they were really getting wet.  Those guys sure seemed to appreciate bunking with mom last night.

We’re in a cloud now. Damp and cold. Mom and Sons packed up with extra jackets and gloves, hoping for a successful time ’round the pond scoring some trout for dinner (in a nice, warm cabin).

I’m guessing this mom and son’s tradition just may include camping in a cabin on this special weekend for years to come.

Happy Mother’s Day to All!
